Life is beautiful not because of the things we see or do. Life is beautiful because of the people we meet.
I love this quote and it’s Simon Sinek btw. The link takes you to a great blog post about ‘getting out of your own way’. The post is about how we get in our own way with self-doubt and fear of failure. He says that when we start to examine our assumptions we realise that that’s all they are – assumptions. More often than not, when those assumptions are challenged, they melt away and a new reality emerges. And drinking or stopping drinking is no different. We think we can’t do it, it will be too hard but this is just an assumption driven by fear and self-doubt. Once you start on the journey, even if it requires some false starts, in time you realise that life without booze isn’t as hard as we thought it would be and a whole new world comes into view. What’s the well used expression about ‘assume’ meaning don’t make an ‘ass out of u and me’? 🙂
So back to his quote. Yes I appreciate the beauty of the world and how I spend my time in it more than I did before, now I’ve taken the booze googles off, but actually this journey would be nothing without the people I’ve met. That is the one thing that has kept me on this path and words cannot express how much gratitude I owe to all of you out there who have shared your stories, read mine and given feedback and generally supported me when I was feeling a bit wobbly. If booze was my sole ‘crutch’ before it has been replaced by the most amazing support network both in real and virtual life. Now that assumption has been completely buried under the evidence to the contrary. Do you need to get out of your own way?
